Organizers of Cornyation, one of San Antonio's most popular Fiesta events, this week distributed over $120,000 in donations to three local AIDS/HIV charities. Additionally they awarded scholarships to four graduating high school seniors.
The money was raised during the six performances of Cornyation held this year at the Charlene McCombs Empire Theater from April 12 -14. Every year, all six performance typically sell out.
The check presentation event was held at the offices of Hope Action Care on June 30. Members of the board of Cornyation along with Cornyation founder Ray Chavez presented checks in the amount of $40,000 each to BEAT AIDS, the San Antonio AIDS Foundation and Hope Action Care.
Robert Rheam scholarships also were given to Stephanie Cavazos, Alexander Bernal, Matilda Burnabee and Ryan Garrett. All four seniors are going on to college to pursue a theater-related curriculum.
After the check presentation, recording star Martha Wash, who's in town to perform at the Pride San Antonio Block Party, made a special appearance where she spoke briefly and then posed for pictures with her fans.
