In Texas ...

Through December 2002, 61,534 AIDS cases have been reported in Texas and 55% of those have died

Through December 2002, 4,488 AIDS cases were reported in San Antonio and 2,344 of those have died

Texas is the 4th state in the nation with the largest number of reported AIDS cases

AIDS is the fourth leading cause of death in Texas amoung individuals age 25-34

Hispanics make up 20% of reported AIDS cases in the United States and in Texas

Hispanics make up 50% of reported AIDS cases in San Antonio

HIV-1 cases among Hispanics have increased steadily and this group now represents nearly 20% of all individuals with AIDS

Minority women, particularly African American, are disproportionately infected with HIV

African American women in San Antonio make up 22% of reported AIDS cases reported through June 2003, while only representing 10% of the female population locally

Women represent an increasing proportion of new HIV-1 infections and heterosexual contact is an increasing cause of new cases of HIV-1 in the United States

In the United States ...

Since the beginning of the HIV epidemic, 774,467 persons have been reported with AIDS in the United States and of these, 448,060 have died



Behavior interventions, including school-based programs, peer-to-peer interventions, strategies that limit needle sharing, strategies that use parent-to-child communication, client-centered counseling, and personalized risk-reduction strategies, are effective in promoting healthy behaviors that are protective against HIV.
