Education and Prevention

"You're The Cure" Program

The San Antonio AIDS Foundation has had a United Way funded HIV prevention education program since 1992. The "You're The Cure" program provides HIV education and prevention information. Although the target age group for the program is ages 10 - 24, we offer tailored presentations to a variety of audiences of all ages and settings. Tailored topics can include information on AIDS discrimination, universal precautions and sexually transmitted diseases to name a few.

Perhaps the most unique part of the program is that a person living with HIV or AIDS shares with the audience their emotional, physical, social and financial challenges posed by HIV. The program is currently providing education to 19 school districts and several colleges in and around San Antonio, businesses, health care facilities, youth groups, correctional facilities, and court mandated classes for probationers.

Other programs include, but are not limited to:

  • HIV Testing - SAAF has been offering HIV testing for several years now. In March 2003, we became the first agency in San Antonio to offer the Oraquick Rapid HIV Test. The Oraquick test is fast, easy and offers results in as little as 20 minutes. We also continue to offer a standard blood test with results ready in three to five business days.

Medical Services

Our commitment is to offer the highest quality of care to our clients in a professional, compassionate and friendly environment. The San Antonio AIDS Foundation received its Special Care Facility and Residential AIDS Hospice license from the Texas Department of Health in 1990.

Medical Services for residents include the following, but are not limited to:

  • Physician directed 24-hour skilled nursing and hospice care with licensed nurses on all shifts
  • Attedant care by certified nursing assistants
  • Individual, group, substance abuse and pastoral counseling

  • Pick up and administration of all medications
  • Transportation to medical and social service appointments

Case Management

The Case Management Department coordinates and links clients to a wide range of services including medical care, mental health care and other community-based services ensuring timely, coordinated access to care. New clients are assigned a caseworker that helps the client meet as many needs as possible. SAAF also provides some financial assistance programs, as funding is available, to help clients in both emergency and on-going circumstances.

SAAF has administered Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA), a HUD program, for three years providing clients with long-term rental assistance. Case Management services are provided in English and Spanish.

Services provided to clients could include, but are not limited to:

  • Application assistance for Medicaid, Medicare, SSI and SSDI
  • Tenant-based rental assistance
  • Monthly bus passes
  • Emergency financial assistance for rent or utilities
  • Emergency food assistance
  • Referrals to other agencies for any services not provided by SAAF
